Reading Lists
All families are required to own a copy of The Mystery of History, Vol. 2 by Linda Hobar

Parents are also strongly encouraged to purchase the Kingfisher History Encyclopedia or the
Usborne Internet-linked Encyclopedia of World History as well as the History Through the Ages, Resurrection to Revolution timeline figures (avaliable at www.homeschoolinthewoods.com).  Students ages 8 and up will be using these figures as part of a timeline notebook.

Excelsior will also hold a read-a-thon fundraiser in September in which students can win prizes and books. This would be an excellent way to get one of these books for free. Details will be announced at the orientation on the first day of school.

EXCEL READING PROGRAM

The EXCEL Reading Program is designed to encourage students to read and explore in-depth the topics discussed in class as well as for students to develop a life-long habit of reading.  Students receive a designated number of points for each book they read and for which they turn in an index card (described below).  Students are awarded prizes through the year based on the number of points they earn both personally and as a class.

EXCEL RULES:

Non-fiction biographies and history books can also be approved by the History Teacher for points. Books that the History Teacher assigns will count for EXCEL as well.

Any age child can read any book on the EXCEL list or on the required reading list to receive the points. The points also count if the child is read to or listens to the book on tape or CD.

Important: The student must turn in an index card for each book to receive points. The card must include:

            Student’s name
            Name of book
Number of pages in the book
            Three sentences describing the book
Number of points for the book

Students who reach 35 points by the end of the first semester will be eligible for a prize.

Students who reach 60 points by the end of the second semester will be eligible for a prize. The top three students with the most points will receive prizes. The class with the most average points will be awarded a pizza and petit-four party.
