ACADEMY PROGRAM
Excelsior! Academy's program consists of five classes: art, literature, music, drama, and history - all taught from a Christian perspective. In the 2008-2009 school year, we will be studying the Middle Ages, Renaissance and Reformation. Students will study the middle ages and learn about the art, literature, history, music and drama of this time period.

Excelsior! Academy classes meet on Tuesdays at Park Street Baptist Church from 10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.

Students 8 yrs old through High School are divided into age-graded classes and rotate among each of these five subjects:

  • HISTORY - In an exciting study of the Middle Ages, students will explore the fascinating cultures of Rome, Europe, and more. Join us as we read, learn, and investigate how the people of the dark ages survived. How did they live? Who were they? How did their world shape the world we live in today? There will be some study required outside of class as well as a few hands-on projects to challenge the students as they submerge themselves in this fun study of history.
  • MUSIC -   For the school year 2008 - 2009 Music Class will touch on a variety of aspects of the Middle Ages that will be studied from Mr. Pipes Songs and Hymns of the Reformation. We will be using some instruments as well as singing and studing the form of music in the Middle Age time.  Students will study the beautiful music composed during this period as well as the rich musical history of the period. A more detailed syllabus will be developed and released at a later date.
  • ART - This class will involve learning basic art skills and terminology as well as learning about the styles and mediums used during this period.
  • LITERATURE - Students will be learning about the literature of the Middle Ages. Authors, as well as styles of writing, will be explored. Outside reading will be given in order to understand the works properly. Approximately 5-6 books will be required reading for the year. Older classes may read one extra, and younger classes may read one less. Reading lists will be given for supplemental reading as well. One project on a book will be assigned. It is required that students read these books; otherwise, the discussion time in class is meaningless and boring to the students who have not read the books. This often promotes bad behavior in class, which is a distraction to others. Please include these books as a part of your homeschool curriculum to get the most out of this class.
  • DRAMA -

8 Year Old Transition ClassThis self-contained class covers all the same subjects as our Academy program for older students, but on a level appropriate for their age.  The 8 Year Old Class will be more challenging than the younger class with more emphasis on reading and writing.

4 through 7 Year Old Classes -
These classes are self-contained programs that cover all of the same subjects as our regular program. Space is limited.
