Our Academics
Excelsior recognizes the importance of developing a well-rounded student - one who excels in academics, but who also has a firm foundation in spiritual concepts and a Biblical worldview.
Given this mission, Excelsior offers rigorous coursework while also being taught from a Christian worldview by a highly qualified teacher.
All teachers either hold a certification in education or are experts in their content and/or have worked in a content-related field.
Elementary: K4 through 5th grade
The elementary years are integral to a student’s success throughout grade school because it teaches foundational skills which the student will then build upon as they progress through the grade levels.
Excelsior's core classes (along with fine arts classes coupled with physical education) provides Excelsior students with a curriculum suited to their growing minds and bodies. Given this importance, Excelsior offers the following benefits to ensure your student excels in the foundations:
- One main classroom teacher and one teaching assistant in each class; this keeps the teacher-to-student ratio small and provides ample opportunities for children to ask questions and receive support as needed.
- For children enrolled twice a week, they receive the following electives in addition to their core academy classes: two days of art, one spanish class, one physical education class, and one music class.
- Weekly corporate worship with combined grade levels to facilitate moral and spiritual growth.
Elementary Electives
- STEM - This class offers students the opportunity to learn basic foundational concepts in science, technology, engineering, and math. Whether you have a reluctant student who “doesn’t like math or science” or a budding astrophysicist, each student will enjoy the experiential and kinesthetic learning of this class.
- Karate - Master Blane is a certified black belt sure to teach your child respect, self-control, and the importance of bodily discipline in this class.
- Early Drop-off - If you need to drop off your child before the typical 10:00am class time, this class is for you.
Middle School: 6th through 8th grade
Middle school is a time of transition and change. Developmentally, your student is maturing both physically, emotionally, and mentally.
Similarly, your student begins transitioning from learning foundational information to applying and building upon that foundation. They are no longer learning to read, but reading to learn.
Excelsior integrates the following components into their curriculum to ensure your student transitions with success:
- One main classroom teacher and one teaching assistant in 6th and 7th grade classes; this keeps the teacher-to-student ratio small and provides ample opportunities for children to ask questions and receive support as needed.
- 8th grade retains one main teaching teacher with a small class size to ensure the transition from middle to high school is successful.
- The Middle School curriculum offers two tracks in 4th through 7th grade so that electives may be tailored to either the interests and/or needs of each individual student.
- Fine Arts Track: art, music, and physical education
- Academic Track: geography and creative writing
- 8th graders have the opportunity to take both English and history for high school credit. Students may also choose to take Health & Nutrition for ½ of a high school credit if declared before the beginning of the school year.
Middle School Electives
- Advanced Drama - Although offered for high school credit for 9th-12th, middle schoolers have the option to try out for supporting roles and participate in the Advanced Drama class.
- Monthly Chess Club - students can learn strategy and critical thinking while playing with friends.
High School: 9th through 12th grade
Excelsior’s high school classes meet all SCAIHS requirements for college preparatory classes with the option to increase rigor through additional honors credit coursework.
High school classes are a-la-carte and are designed so that each student may choose which classes they need to best fit their requirements and schedule.
Excelsior does offer, however, bundle options for certain classes that comprise the core Excelsior classes for high school students.
In addition to classes, high school students also participate in corporate worship weekly.
